My cousin is a few years older then me. He got his drivers license 1st of course and had a neat AMC Hornet for his 1st car. His second car was a very classy 1969 AMX with a 290 cu. in. engine with a 4 speed. I enjoyed many thrilling rides in this car and was quite impressed with it's performance.

The big 16 year birthday finally arrived for me. I was able to dive legally now. (oh yeah, lived on a farm and had been driving farm trucks on the road for awhile. Pretty common back then.)

One of the cool trends in the 70's was the cruising hangouts. The Adrian Mall was one of the local car guy and girl meeting places. I mean everybody cruised the mall. Cool car or not.

Well, one night I was cruising with my cousin Rick in his awesome 69 AMX. Man, we were cool in that car. At least we thought so! Then the big question came. Rick said, "Hey, you want to drive?" Wow, I thought..no way...he is going to let drive his pride and joy? Of course I leaped at the chance.

So I am grabbing gears and getting used to the car when Rick suggested I might want to slow down. We were in town after all. I glanced down at the gauges and told him we were only going 35. Rick looks at me like I am from Mars and said, "That's the tach man!" Oh man, did I feel like a dummy. I dropped into a higher gear and let of the gas and got back down to the legal speed limit.

There were quite a few other things that happened that night. Really reminds me of the movie American Graffiti. Yeah, we had a night that neither of us will ever forget and we are forever bonded by the memories.

Ok the tach, Uh...I was not quite used to the car, but should have realized how fast I was going. You know to this day I still get razzed about the proper use of a tachometer. I take it in stride and fondly remember our days of cruising the mall in a very cool 69 AMX.
